Overview

This course will teach delegates to quickly troubleshoot problems with Cisco router and catalyst switch internetworks. Delegates will learn to remedy communication problems in TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, AppleTalk and Wide Area Networks and utilise troubleshooting tools live on the classroom network.

Prerequisites

Delegates should have an understanding of Advanced Cisco Router Configuration and Catalyst LAN Switch Configuration.

Delegates will learn how to

  • Understand Ethernet, fast Ethernet, and token ring troubleshooting
  • Use specific Cisco commands: show, write, debug, ping, and trace
  • Troubleshoot IP, IPX, AppleTalk, HDLC, ISDN, BRI, and X.25 traffic troubleshooting
  • Understand LAN/WAN problem isolation
  • Use protocol analysers

TROUBLESHOOTING METHODOLOGY:

Initial troubleshooting steps; the problem solving model; troubleshooting procedures; creating an action plan

CISCO CONNECTION ONLINE (CCO):

Bug tool; customer engineering call procedures; Technical Assistance Centre (TAC)

LAN/WAN TROUBLESHOOTING PROBLEM AREAS:

Physical layer responsibilities; data link layer responsibilities; ethernet token ring and FDDI frame formats and problem areas

THIRD PARTY TOOLS AND APPLICATIONS:

Protocol analysers; features and types; protocol analysis plan; problem solving methodology

PERFORMANCE FEATURES AND INTERNETWORKING REQUIREMENTS OF COMMON NETWORK PROTOCOLS:

Protocol characteristics; connection-oriented services; Novell protocol suite (IPX/SPX) support requirements; Appletalk protocol suite

DIAGNOSING AND CORRECTING CATALYST PROBLEMS:

Description of CiscoWorks for switched Internetworks (CWSI); troubleshooting catalyst switch LEDs; RMON and switch probe; switch internal architecture; switch diagnostic tools: ping, CDP, all show commands, syslog

FRAME RELAY TROUBLESHOOTING:

Understanding LMI; frame relay map command; debug frame relay commands

DIAGNOSING AND CORRECTING ISDN BRI PROBLEMS:

Review of ISDN BRI; all ISDN show commands; troubleshooting layer 1 S/T interface; troubleshooting layer 2 BRI ISDN

CISCO’S DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS:

Using debug commands; using PING, extended PING and trace to confirm network connectivity; how to perform core dump
